The only thing I did between it working and not working was listen to iTunes (which happen to also be acting weird, even after updating it) and watching youtube.

Mine seemed to be pointing to AMD files. After reading a blog post and downloading a small program I realized these registry settings store the File Explorer view settings for each folder we view. I was able to access the original path folder contents, which means it creates an infinite loop. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off2. The next time this happens I will open that program and see what the last setting was that causes Explorer to crash.
